I was discussing volunteering with a relatively new Christian. I loved his take on it.

"It's not such much the church asking me to do something as God asking me through the church." Now there's a thought. What about that for an ecclesiology?

shouldnt it be the volunteer asking the church what can I do for the church? :S thats how I've always seen it!

Kind of goes back to a feeling I have, it is not that I am a particuarly good person who wants to be helpful (in fact I am in awe of anyone who motivate themselves to do things out of the goodness of their heart). I feel compelled to help, I presume compelled by the Holy Spirit.

That's a good take on volunteering, though it doesn't have to apply just to church life, God could be asking you to volunteer to clean the streets, or do charity shop work etc.

A person should be able to ask what can I do for the church, or for society, but sometimes people need a little push.
